As a fellow biomedical scientist, I also agree. But I find it incredible that no one that I know of has heretofore brought any significance out of the massive amount of money spent on studies that do nothing but quote statistics, and never get to the nitty gritty. Which is: If you don't get enough sleep of good quality, you can't handle your stress hormones, and you will get depressed. It doesn't matter why you are not sleeping.
If you don't get enough sleep, you are doomed.
They should figure out how to help us sleep. Period.
Sleep deprivation kills.

I guess I'm going to live longer as well because I have a large number of hot flashes and it's true that depressed women have more menopause symptoms because the more depressed they get the worst it becomes. Hormone replacement therapy is one of the best treatment for women to offset their hormone imbalances and to simply feel better but a healthy lifestyle is my best bet. Relaxation techniques or meditation can tremendously help manage stress and will help you sleep better. It is important for women to monitor their cholesterol level during menopause because of their risk of heart disease. And it is a good idea for women to be allowed to take natural hormone therapy like the bioidentical hormone because they are safer and effective. There are natural creams available over the internet but it is recommended to check with your healthcare provider before using it.

I found that running/walking helped me get through the depression. I had never been a fitness junkie, but got into pretty good shape during menopause once I discovered how much better I felt.

I also want to add a word of caution about the urge that some medical clinicians feel to medicate for depression. As Lynette indicated, there are certainly individuals who may need medication to keep from going off the rails, but Nature gives us some depression at mid-life FOR A REASON. It is part of the mystery of our humanity that we are cognizant of our mortality, and that hits us emotionally at just the time our bodies are changing hormonally. Much wisdom and insight can be harvested by sitting with those feelings, as opposed to numbing ourselves.

I'm glad to know that I too should live to be 210---between hotflashes and night sweats (and I'm on estrogen besides!!!! tho it was a surgically induced hysterectomy--probably not my wisest choice--) I loose a few pounds a day in persperation. As far as the depression goes, if it wasn't for yoga (almost daily) and meditation (DAILY) and some friends, I'd have given up long ago--it's been 7 plus yrs. now. But I agree totally with your comments. (warm bath, valerian root and eye shades for sleep are a must as well)
